MudCats Defeat Bears in Championship, 8-7, On Walk-Off HR
The Conroe MudCats, a first season expansion team, faced off against the Bears in the North League Championship game Sunday evening. Grinding pitching, defensive stands, timely 2 out RBI’s and long balls were the keys to success. MudCats Starting Pitcher, Stevyn Rivera chewed through 7 tough innings, giving up 7R/6E on 13 hits, 3 strike outs and 2 walks. Grant Campbell pitched the 8th, keeping the game knotted at 7 all. With pitching grinding it out all evening and traffic on the paths, defensive plays made by 3B Jesus Ayala and SS Jacob Downey staved off additional run opportunities.
Offensively, the long ball was the equalizer for the MudCats who hit 5 in the game. Brian Peters was 2-3 with 2 HR and 2 RBI, Jacob Downey was 2-3 with a HR, 1 RBI, 2 Runs Scored, Reid Harton was 1-3 with a HR and 3 RBI, with Rivera also logging 2-3 and 1 RBI at the plate. Facing a 7-6 deficit in the bottom of the 7th, Rivera had a key single up the middle pushing Downey across the plate with 2 outs, knotting the game back up at 7-7, and the 7th run scored with 2 outs, of the night.
Time lapsed upon completion of the top of the 8th in a 7-7 tie and the MudCats due up for the home half of the inning. Lead-off batter, Randy Rakowitz, previously 0-3 on the day, drove the first pitch he saw to right-center field for a championship clenching walk-off solo home run, the 5th and final one for the MudCats, ending the season undefeated, 9-0-1 and 2018 North Division Fall Champions. ~Randy Rakowitz, (Manager )
